I'm using it to make my own videos soon. With Filmic Pro LogV2, you can get up to 12 stops of dynamic range. That is astonishing. Arri Cameras have 14-15 stops.

Great points! About real camera HDR, the EOS-R you’re using has an HDR mode. It’s buried in the menus and is only accessible in specific modes so it’s easy to miss. It is effective, though. You should try it out!

I actually did cover this topic in brief form about a year ago - uzvid.com/video/video-hCptUusPoWE.html But until they mount a 1 inch or larger sensor on smartphones I'll always chose my DSLR or mirrorless camera for better images. There is just so much more potential for the person who knows how to use it well.

This is why I unsubscribed. You try to be technical but in many points you are wrong or you just guess. Of course big camera have better sensor performance but when you talk about HDR you missed technical part by years :-D and saying that wide angle is not possible with phone sensor and you even mention crop factor ..... You had similar flaws also in GoPro video. Total amateur without proper research....

Smartphone HDR takes advantage of a niche. As long as your video fall within that parameter the video will appear satisfactory. The DSLR has the same potential albeit not as advanced under Program or Auto. Outside of the presets, you can go even further with customization. Something you can't do with your phone.

Hello matty, big fan... I use mobile phone for all the vlogs. Highest view on my channel is shot on mobile. I use one plus 5 mobile as its front camera has very good EIS. I also have 80D but don't use 80D as its bulky and in public places where we generally visit 80D bring attention and people ask us not to use DSLR for shooting. So for my style of vlogging mobile is best.

Smartphones will be a popular choice for film making as you have it with all time including editing apps and the computer to do it on. Most videos end up on social media so how much quality do you actually need. I think f stoppers did a bikini shoot on an iPhone and the results were pretty impressive, of course a hot model helps a lot ! Camera companies can learn a lot from smartphone manufacturers on using software in the hardware. Yrs bigger sensors, better glass, more mega pixels resolution in a dslr / mirrorless will give you better results. However if they just fir social media will any one really care !

Great video Matti! :) I think in the near future, journalists and TV reporters will start using phones more in the field. But for real proffesional film making, documentaries etc., nothing comes close to the high end camera set-ups. Also, playing with lights and using portable light looks way better than any HDR software will in a long time.

I'm in the habit of underexposing my iphone JPEGs, to expose for the highlights. Then I lift the shadows in post (with the iOS editor). That's what this "HDR Video" looks like. Not a combined exposure, but just a lift (and resulting flattening) of the Shadows band to correct only the face-detection area.

Hey Matti and the UZvid world! Just wanted to point out that this is a very good point that our cell phones do have incredible dynamic range, like the Galaxy s9plus with its two lenses it can adjust for two exposures at the same time.. **However DSLR cameras are doing this HDR thing as well for example the Canon 77D does HDR video, the 77D also features an HDR Movie mode that can be used to achieve greater highlight and shadow detail when recording in high contrast scenarios. This mode captures two HD frames at different exposures, one normal and one underexposed, in short succession at up to 60 fps and then composites them during playback at 30 fps to create a movie with a longer-appearing dynamic range.

I think smartphone manufacturer's call it computational photography / videography. I think the downside is the processors in DSLR and Mirrorless. How good are the processors when compared to smartphone processors? I'm not a fan of HDR anyway.

As far as I know, my Sony A7III after sony ISO level triggers a noise reduction "software" and the whole HLG profile is already applying some tweaks to a log footage. But I also wondered when are they going to use more software enhancements on DSLR's, maybe they haven't reached the hardware limitations and is preferable to have something by hardware than software.

So much misinformation from anachronistic camera users who won't accept simple facts or are ignorant of smartphone cameras or even camera technology in general. A camera is a camera, be it in a big magnesium body or a little smartphone. Where are the manual film shooters to provide context and yell at you to get off their lawn? Oh right they probably can't even use a computer. 1. Lots of phones have HDR. It's nothing new. It just so happens the latest iPhone is pushing it harder with better algorithms and really fast chips to process and combine all the images. And considering the Google Pixel is considered the king of HDR and computational photography and yet people here are only aware of it on the latest iPhone shows the level of ignorance. It's not even saved in an HDR format. It's compressed. The latest Sony phones can one up App e by saving in an HDR format that plays on an HDR display and TV. 2. Crop factor? Wtf are you talking about? Regular cameras have crop factors as well. It's even worse in 4k, especially on Canon cameras. Smartphones have minimal crop as they are built around 4k and aren't constrained by weak image processors on regular cameras that can't handle recording the full sensor readout. 3. Can't do portraits properly or measure depth for bokeh? Wtf? Going to use the google pixel as the example again. It can use its dual pixels (phase detection) to measure depth through fancy math and processing. It's not 100% perfect yet but it's getting there and it's at the point where most people who aren't seasoned photographers won't know the difference. And that's with only one camera. The extra data from a second or third camera makes it even better. The organic rolloff can be simulated and even adjusted. What about video you ask? They can most certainly simulate it all in video as well, and are already experimenting with it in phones like the huawei mate 20 pro. I don't understand how illogical some of you people can be. It's like saying you love Canadian bacon but you hate ham. It's the same damn thing. Sensor. Lens. Image processor. Both have all of these. The difference is all the money for R&D is being poured into smartphones while standalone cameras have been stagnating for years. Video in particular is heavily dependent on the image processor capabilities. And in this case, it supercedes whatever advantage a big dslr camera sensor and lens may have with a processor from 2010.

RED Cameras already implemented years ago, of course is not a dslr and is way way more expensive, but it kind sucks that phones con compite or people think that the image is better, but I think is manufacturers cheat for maketing proposes, for example 6dmkii, processor is so capable of do 4k and they already implemented on 5dmkiv 2 years before the 6dmkii but they don't use in theat camera for marketing, so my thoughts is that phone is not that competitor yet, but It will be soon because of the sad strategy of sale in slow steps.

This got me thinking...DSLRs or Mirrorless professional grade Cameras are meant to be used professionally and not like a point and shoot. May be that's the reason it lacks fancy features like HDR, Night Sight and other stuff. Processing a picture must be done manually for professional works, thus one shouldn't expect a camera to do it for them. Mobile Cameras are meant for everyone, not just photo enthusiasts, so it is acceptable for it to have auto HDR, etc. However, if People are some how willing to spend DSLR money to be used as point and shoot, may be manufactures can think of introducing an AI mode in the knob packing all kind of fancy AI features. It may increase the cost and may cause battery life issues - generally a lot of trade offs that must be dealt.

Quality is not only about sensor size, nor HDR, lots of things involved here, it's not true that DSRL are best and that smartphone sucks or smartphone filmaking is absurd ... those're thoughts too dogmatic in my opinion. On the other hand HDR is one thing and (metering & mixing) exposure (compensation) is another. Talking about quality, colour correction in this video as an example (take a look at these seconds, how colour changes in the wooden beams from the left and also with the branches on the right) while camera focus changes 02:18 to 02:24, blah, blah, blah Anyway, ideas are what make a difference! and sponsored videos what make people change their minds of course! Nevertheless, I love the editing transitions and music from this video!

I made a video on the 5d mark iv's built in HDR vs magic lantern hdr a couple of years ago in my channel. The biggest struggle with the hdr is the ghosting and the limited frame rate, but for a shot where you just want a high dynamic range, and you're not moving too much, it looks pretty good and natural.
